Speaker: Dr Joël Mossong, PhD (Head of Unit Surveillance épidémiologique des maladies infectueuses, LNS)
Content
My talk will provide an overview of the infectious disease surveillance setup at the Laboratoire National de Santé, covering some recent outbreaks and epidemiological studies on antibiotic resistance. Finally I will provide some examples of next generation sequencing for "bug" monitoring purposes in general.
Biosketch
After his PhD on mathematical modelling at the University of Warwick, Joël worked as a biostatistician at the institute formerly known as "CRP-Santé". In 2003, he moved to the Laboratoire National de Santé, where he was responsible for setting up the infectious disease surveillance & epidemiology unit focusing mainly on foodborne (Salmonella & Campylobacter) and vaccine-preventable pathogens (influenza & human papillomavirus). In 2011-13 he worked on the population-level impact of antiretroviral treatment on the epidemiology of HIV during a sabbatical in KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa. His research currently focuses on applying next generation sequencing methods to help investigate outbreaks and inform public health and intervention policy making in Luxembourg.
