Epidural Stimulation as Spinal Cord Stimulation (SCS) can help to reduce chronic neuropathic pain. Pulsed radiofrequency stimulation (PRF) is an intervention currently used for pain treatment in the dorsal ganglion and facet joints, PRF does not produce an obvious tissue lesion and the nerve has only a temporary lesion. Epidural PRF (ePRF) combines the techniques of SCS and PRF.

In the retrospective study (EPIPULSE-retro), success, failure, side effects and complication data of ePRF stimulation on patients with different kind of pain (back, neck, and extremities), will be investigated.
The prospective part (EPIPULSE-prosp) of the study has a random design with patient being enrolled in one of the two study groups (eprf stimulation or best conventional treatment). The aim is to compare ePRF stimulation to best conventional treatment, in patients with the same type of pain as described in the retrospective part. Patients will be enrolled and followed for 12 months. Data will be collected at enrollment and the scheduled follow-up visits.
EPIPULSE was recently launched by Dr.Frank Hertel at the Centre Hospitalier de Luxembourg (CHL) in cooperation with the Clinical and Epidemiological Investigation Center (CIEC). There are two other international centers participating in the retrospective and the prospective part of the Study; “Neurochirurgie”, Bonn (DE) and “Orthopädie und Unfallchirurgie”, Dortmund (DE).
