Covid in Children

While the number of person tested positive for an infection with the SARS-COV2 virus has reached 10 million people worldwide, the situation of the children toward the covid pandemic is still unclear.

As mentioned by the COVID-19 task force  in its “New report on SARS-CoV-2 infections in children”[i], the course of infection in children is almost always very mild or even asymptomatic. However,  in  rare and individual cases, infections can take extreme courses or even lead to death. Dr Isabel de la Fuente and her team at CHL have published  a  case where a pediatric COVID-19 was associated with a life-threatening myocarditis[ii]. Other reports find a multisystem inflammatory syndrom in relationship with a SAR-COV2 infection.  It is therefore of utmost importance to keep a good balance between the risks linked to the exposure to the virus and the danger of social isolation for the children.

The pediatric team at CHL is preparing a retrospective study in order to gain knowledge about the situation for the children in Luxembourg.

Reliable data on the prevalence, herd immunity or the dynamics of the COVID-19 pandemic among children in Luxembourg are  not available. The pediatric team of CHL, together with the CIEC, are currently following closely the evolution of the pandemic among the children in Luxembourg and are prepared to launch quickly a pediatric study, would this be required.
